Description

La Baume

The history of Domaine de la Baume began in 1880 when the PRAT family, passionate and in love with the vine, was convinced of making it a renowned property. At that time, the vineyard had been left fallow after the phylloxera crisis. Jean Prat, the father, had a characterful house built there, “La Folie”, which will remain the emblem of the property over time. For around twenty years with the help of his sons, Jean Prat greatly contributed to developing the reputation of his wines and invested heavily in the vineyard by rebuilding 100 hectares. In 1900, he opened a boutique dedicated to Domaine de la Baume wines on the famous Boulevard Haussmann in Paris, an incredible showcase for the property’s wines.

Forced by the force of age, he passed on the domain to his sons as well as the passion and taste for work. Two generations of owners succeeded one another and in 1990 the story took a new turn with the arrival of the Hardy family, of Australian origin. The Hardys transmitted much more than their know-how, they also brought a state of mind. In an effort to restructure the vineyard, they planted international grape varieties on the property. They were also the ones who initiated the night harvest and introduced modern winemaking and aging techniques which made it possible to create these very particular styles, with the purest respect for the grapes. Since 2003, the estate has belonged to the Helfrich family, who continued to develop the property and promote its wines on the international scene.
