Pata Negra

About the Winery:

Pata Negra is the flagship premium wine brand of García-Carrión, Spain's leading wine producer with a winemaking heritage dating back to 1890. Unlike a traditional single-estate winery, Pata Negra unites wines from eight prestigious Spanish Denominations of Origin (DO), offering authentic regional expressions under one internationally recognized brand.

Heritage & History:

The origins of Pata Negra trace back to the historic Bodegas Señorío de los Llanos in Valdepeñas, where exceptional Gran Reserva wines were distinguished by a black capsule and became known locally as "Pata Negra." The trademark was officially registered in 1987, and in 2007 García-Carrión transformed Pata Negra into Spain's first multi-DO premium wine brand. Today, it is exported to more than 150 countries and has become one of Spain's most awarded wine brands.

Vineyards & Terroir:

Pata Negra sources grapes from carefully selected vineyards across Spain's most prestigious wine regions, including Rioja, Ribera del Duero, Toro, Rueda, Valdepeñas, Jumilla, La Mancha, and Cava. These regions feature diverse climates, elevations, and soil types—from limestone and clay to gravel and sandy soils—allowing each wine to reflect the unique character of its origin.

Winemaking Philosophy:

The philosophy of Pata Negra is to showcase the diversity of Spanish terroirs while preserving the identity of each Denomination of Origin. Traditional viticulture is combined with modern cellar technology, controlled fermentation, and carefully managed oak maturation to produce wines that express authenticity, balance, and regional character.

Signature Wines:

The portfolio includes Rioja Crianza, Rioja Reserva, Ribera del Duero Tempranillo, Toro, Rueda Verdejo, Valdepeñas Reserva, Jumilla Apasionado, La Mancha selections, and Cava Brut. Tempranillo is the flagship grape variety, complemented by Verdejo, Monastrell, Airén, and traditional Cava varieties depending on the region.

Awards & Recognition:

Pata Negra has earned more than 400 medals in prestigious national and international wine competitions. The brand is widely recognized for delivering authentic Spanish wines with exceptional quality and value, making it one of the most internationally successful Spanish wine brands.

Sustainability:

As part of García-Carrión, Pata Negra supports sustainable vineyard management through responsible water use, energy-efficient production, environmentally conscious packaging, and long-term vineyard preservation. The Fauna Ibérica collection also promotes awareness of Spain's native wildlife by featuring endangered Iberian animal species on its labels.
